About the
art.

BJJ traces to Mitsuyo Maeda, a Japanese judoka who taught Carlos Gracie in 1917. The Gracie family — Helio especially — adapted the art for smaller bodies, refining ground fighting into a system that could neutralize a stronger opponent through leverage, position, and patience.

A century later, BJJ is the most influential grappling system in MMA and the only adult martial art where a 60kg woman regularly submits 100kg men in training. It rewards the long game: most people get worse before they get better, then never stop getting better.

What you'll train

Position before submission. Leverage before strength.

A ground system built so a smaller body can neutralise a larger one — escapes, guard, passing, control, and the patience to hold a position until it gives. Every session runs technique, then partner drilling, then live rolls with rotating partners, in gi and no-gi.

The art

The gentle art — and the only one where a smaller body reliably beats a larger one. Leverage instead of strength, position instead of panic, and a curriculum deep enough that people are still learning it three decades in.

Always assume that your opponent is going to be bigger, stronger and faster than you; so that you learn to rely on technique, timing and leverage rather than brute strength.
