About the
art.

Kyokushin is the strongest karate. Masutatsu “Mas” Oyama — the fighter famous for felling bulls bare-handed and the 100-man kumite — opened his first dojo in Tokyo in 1953 and formalised the International Karate Organization, the Kyokushin Kaikan, in 1964. He rejected point-stop sparring for full contact: bare-knuckle strikes to the body, kicks to the head and legs, and the conditioning to take all of it.

That ruleset reshaped modern combat sport. Kyokushin's knockdown circuit fed the Dutch kickboxing and K-1 era — Andy Hug, Francisco Filho, Bas Rutten and a young Georges St-Pierre all came up through it. It is karate stripped of pretence: the strike has to land, and you have to stand there and answer it.
